The Five Islands are located off the south coast of Koh Samui. The 5 Islands are known locally in Thai as ‘Koh Si Koh Ha’, meaning ‘Four Islands - Five Islands’. One island is hidden behind another. Five Islands are home to the swift birds who use the islands for nesting. The swifts nests are highly prized and sought after for the main ingredient for ‘bird’s nest soup’. The birds are not protected but their nests are. The nests can sell for thousands of US dollars on the black market. The Sea Gypsies are the only human inhabitants of the Five Islands. The gipsies live in small wooden homes perched on the rocky outcrops. They live a simple life without wifi or electricity. The sea gipsies are employed to guard the nests against poachers attempting to steal the precious commodities.Â
