Water Safety Understanding the Warning Flags

You’ll notice flags flying on all the beaches in Koh Samui. These flags help keep you safe by letting you know about the water conditions. Always pay attention to them before going into the water.

Here’s what each flag means:

  • Black & White Flag: This is the designated area for watersports.

  • Double Red Flags: The beach is closed due to public activities.

  • Single Red Flag: The water is very dangerous with strong waves—stay out of the water.

  • Yellow Flag: There are moderate waves. Be cautious and pay attention while swimming.

  • Green Flag: The water is calm and safe to enjoy.

  • Purple Flag: Be careful—there may be dangerous sea creatures like jellyfish and stingrays.

Remember, it’s simple to stay safe if you pay attention to the flags before getting in the water!

Lifeguards at Koh Samui Watersports

Our crews are trained lifeguards, and they also have basic first aid. They are on the beaches of Lamai and Lipa Noi between the hours of 10am to 6pm when watersports are open. It’s important to remember that lifeguards are there to help in emergencies, not to supervise children. Parents should always keep an eye on their children while they are on the beach or in the water. Never leave children unsupervised.

Children and Watersports

Koh Samui is a great place for families to enjoy the beach, but remember, children often don't recognise the dangers around them. While our lifeguards watch the beaches carefully, it’s always best for parents to supervise their children at all times, especially near the water.

Inflatables and Water Safety

Inflatables shaped like animals or other fun objects may look exciting, but they aren’t safe for use in the ocean. These lightweight toys can easily carry a child or adult out of their depth. If using armbands or rings, always stay in shallow water and make sure an adult is supervising.

General Watersports Safety

When enjoying watersports, always wear a lifejacket. Before you start, make sure it fits properly and check that the straps are secure. Helmets should also fit snugly.

And if you’re ever unsure about the equipment or feel uncomfortable, it’s okay to walk away with a smile! Your safety is most important.
